Prevent Marriage Failure and Make It Better

If you are concerned about marriage failure, then you are probably already at a point where things are not going well. Lots of marriages go through turbulent times where there seems to be no other solution but to get a divorce. Stop right there. If your marriage has any meaning left, you can do something to help save it.

The first thing you need to do is make a date with your spouse. Leave the kids with a sitter and go to a restaurant where the two of you can have a conversation without interruptions and where you will be less likely to have an all out arguement. Do not order any drinks, because you do not want the night to start off with one or both of you getting buzzed on alcohol and then not being able to talk together in an intelligent way.

The reason you want to get out of the house is mainly because of your kids. If you have been argueing uncontrollably in front of them, you need to stop that now. Your kids can benefit from seeing their parents argue and then work things out, but if it is always mean-spirited fighting that ends in bitterness, this is not healthy for them.

Plan ahead for this date by making a list with two columns – one for the things you love about your spouse and one for the things that you do not like. Take the list with you, but be careful not to start off the night with “I hate it when” or “These are all the things that I really don’t like about you”. If you do that, then the whole date will be a failure.

Even if you are angry or bitter about some things, try not to be negative. If you really want to save your marriage and prevent marriage failure, you both need to want it and work at at it. Sometimes you will need to use a bit of persuation to get them to come around, especially if they have been hurt. It will be a difficult and sometimes painful road, but you can make it through. Your marriage will be stronger and better in the end for your efforts.
