Stage One – Denial

This is the stage where you are convinced that the break up never happened. Because you are living in a part fantasy, you believe that things will go on as normal and you have not yet accepted the fact that they are gone. You tend to go about life like normal, without even a tear because you cannot accept reality yet.

Stage Two – Anger

Once reality sets in, you find yourself with lots of anger that is usually directed at your ex, but can also be directed at yourself, God, or anyone that offers any kind of advice or sympathy.

Stage Three – Bargaining

Saying things like “God, please bring him/her back to me and I will be good for the rest of my life” or trying to make a bargain with your ex to stop the break up can happen in this stage. You may find yourself pleading and wishing for things to be better.

Stage Four – Depression

After you accept that the break up did indeed occur and you find yourself truly alone, depression sets in. This stage is full of hopelessness, bitterness, frustration and mourning. You feel that your future is bleak.

Stage Five – Acceptance

In this stage you have accepted the break up, that you have made mistakes and that there were consequences to those mistakes. Your partner is no longer with you and you need to start to build a new future for yourself. Whether this may include your ex someday or not, you need to acknowledge that things will be different from now on.
